Dark Humor and The Death of a Guppy

Today did not start out as planned.

I turned on my aquarium lights and behold! One of my guppies, Carrots, was sticking out of my mystery snail. Steve, my mystery snail, has been pretty inactive lately. I suspect likely from old age. He mostly just hangs out in his shell, with his trap door partially closed.

It appears that the Carrots got curious and stuck his face into the opening between the door and shell. Steve closed the door, trapping the guppy. Whether it was an accident or self defense I will never know.

Amid exclamations of “Shit, shit shit!” and “WTF Steve!” I took off my watch and removed the snail. I needed tweezers to gently open the door and let the guppy out. As I suspected it was too late and Carrots was dead.

At least Steve got a bit of a snack out of it.

While being shocked and sad the guppy died, I also couldn’t stop laughing. The absurdity of it. To turn on the light and have half a guppy sticking out of my snail!

After I extracted the body, I went in the backyard to dig a hole. My neighbour’s cat promptly appeared, meowing wanting attention and to get inside my house. The cat very helpfully assisted in the digging of the grave, standing the hold and on my spade. He also came inside and inspected my house while I retrieved the remains.

I buried Carrots under a lilac bush in the backyard. Unfortunately guppies, unlike cats, do not have nine lives.

RIP Carrots.
